Mark Carney Government to Unite Canadian Economies

Creating one instead of 13

Ottawa, Ontario – Today, Mark Carney presented a new economic plan to create higher paying jobs, improve affordability, and strengthen our national security.

Removing barriers to internal trade would lower prices for consumers by reducing trade costs by up to 15% and expand our economy by up to $200 billion or 4-8% over the long-term, equivalent to $3,000 to $5,000 more, for every Canadian.

“We are masters of our own economic destiny,” said Mark. “Canada is stronger when it is united, which is why we need to create one Canadian economy instead of 13.”

Tariffs imposed by the U.S. have renewed the urgency to address the long standing barriers that have fragmented our economy and reduced opportunities for too many Canadians.

A Mark Carney-led government will immediately convene a First Ministers’ Meeting to work with provinces and territories on two objectives: to remove interprovincial trade barriers so that Canadians can trade freely and to identify interprovincial projects of national interest so that they can be prioritised and accelerated.

We will promote labour mobility and the recognition of workers’ qualifications. We will ensure that our businesses can sell their products freely by eliminating internal trade barriers that segment our market into 13 separate economies, driving up costs and reducing choice for consumers. We will invest in infrastructure, such as our highways, rail, and ports, to improve Canada’s productivity and economic competitiveness.

“By accelerating decision-making on major projects, Canada will be able to lower costs, attract more investment, create more jobs, and build the strongest economy in the G7,” concluded Mark.
