Vancouver, British Columbia – Today, Mark Carney presented a new plan to help lower building costs and get new homes built for Canadians — including steps to promote innovation and increase productivity in the construction industry.
He did so after visiting the University of British Columbia’s (UBC) Smart Structures Lab, which is leading a research project on volumetric modular construction (VMC). VMC, a new, more sustainable approach to design and build homes and then transport them to be assembled onsite, cuts down construction time and costs significantly.
“Strong communities aren’t built on long commutes and financial worries. They’re made possible when all Canadians can afford to live with dignity.” Mark offered. “We need strong leadership and a clear vision to confront the housing crisis head-on, and build the strongest economy in the G7.”
A Mark Carney-led government will use every resource and tool at its disposal to boost innovation and remove any barriers that slow construction of new homes. It will incentivize scaling in construction to build more houses more quickly, including new support for the Canadian prefabricated and modular housing industry.
Mark Carney is laser-focused on lowering costs for families and will continue to present economic measures to strengthen the economy and ensure households are immediately better off.
“This is a time to build, and we will catalyse enormous private investment to build millions of new homes for younger Canadians,” Mark said.
